LWNGE is an app that removes ads, telemetry and unwanted apps from your own Android TV, over your home Wi-Fi, and can install a lightweight home screen and small add-ons on it. Every change can be undone. LWNGE is published by GoingHyped.

What LWNGE collects

Nothing. LWNGE has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting, and it never sends anything about you, your phone or your TV to the developer or to anyone else.

What stays on your phone

LWNGE keeps these in its own private folder on your phone, and nowhere else:

  • the TVs you registered (name, model, Android version, serial number, address on your home network);
  • snapshots of each TV (its list of apps, a few settings, its home screen and a screenshot), so changes can be undone;
  • a log of the changes LWNGE made;
  • the key your TV uses to recognise LWNGE ("Allow debugging?");
  • photos you pick for the TV's wallpaper, while the app is open.

The demo ("Try LWNGE with a pretend TV") keeps nothing: its pretend TV lives in the app's memory and is gone when you leave the demo or close the app.

Uninstalling LWNGE deletes all of it. LWNGE turns Android's app backup off, so none of it goes into your phone's cloud backup.

What LWNGE connects to

  • Your TV, on your home network only, using Android's debugging connection (ADB) that you turn on in the TV's settings. LWNGE cannot connect to addresses on the internet.
  • GitHub (github.com and its download servers), only when you install or update the LWNGE home screen or an add-on, to download that exact file. LWNGE checks each file's checksum before it is sent to the TV.
  • Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org, upload.wikimedia.org), only when you tap "Get random photos from Wikimedia Commons", to fetch free-licence photos and their credits.

These services receive the ordinary information any download sends (your IP address and the file asked for) and handle it under their own privacy policies. LWNGE sends them nothing else.

Permissions

LWNGE asks Android only for internet access, which it needs to reach your TV over Wi-Fi and to make the downloads above. When you add a photo, Android's own picker gives LWNGE only the picture you choose.

Children

LWNGE is a tool for adults who manage their own TV. It is not directed at children.
